2008 AMA National Motocross schedule released

Same tracks ... but a few changes

AMA Racing announced today the schedule for the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF. Several significant changes to the schedule have been made for 2008, all in the interest of improvement.

According to Doug Neubauer, AMA Vice President of Racing, the 2008 schedule was a collaborative effort created with the input of riders, race teams and the National Promoters Group (NPG). "We set out to accomplish several objectives when producing the schedule for next season," said Neubauer. "Included among those things was a tighter, more compact season, additional time off for the riders and teams between the end of the AMA Supercross Series and the beginning of AMA Motocross, and an improved flow as the series travels around the nation."

Additionally, the season will now kick-off in Southern California on Memorial Day weekend and end on the east coast on Labor Day weekend, both dates recognized as the traditional beginning and end of the summer holiday season, respectively.

The Hangtown Motocross Classic from Sacramento, CA has also been moved to avoid conflict with the AMA Superbike Championship event held at nearby Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA. According to AMA Racing, this change was the result of fan input.

The 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF schedule:

May 25 - Glen Helen Raceway Park, San Bernardino CA

June 1 Hangtown Motocross Classic, Sacramento CA

From Racer X online: "Sarah Whitmore Before we get into the racing stuff, Sarah Whitmore must have made some kind of history yesterday when she backflipped a 110 into Travis Pastrana’s foam pit. DC Shoes’ Ken Block and Blair Marlin were there to check on their newest rider, Travis, and like everyone who visits Annapolis, Maryland, they ended up doing some flipping of their own!

“Sarah Whitmore! She killed it — first girl to flip a dirt bike into a foam pit!” wrote Mr. Block in his e-mail before he headed for Steel City himself. “Damn, we had a lot of fun today. Travis’ place is amazing.”

Cassie Price and Anna
Shaw 2005 Silverdome
Supercross race.
In the news, Cross-Up Cat and the spirit of Moto Mutt
will be discussing the events of the season. Kinda of like Siskel and Ebert only less intelligent like.

The spirit of Moto Mutt: "Woo hoo! Here we go with an up in the air 2008 supercross season." "Guess Bubba is out for knee surgery!" "Do you think Chad Reed has what it takes to win this?" "What about the lites class?" "Up for grabs, too?"

Cross-Up Cat: "Yeah, it should be another fun year for the spectators to watch supercross." "It will be questionable if we will have time at our house!"

Moto Mutt: "We will find the time!" "It is cool that CBS has so many television times scheduled for those of us who live out in the boondocks and get only 4 channels!"

Cross Up Cat: "Yeah that's the price we pay for having our own motocross track...small price if you ask me!"

Moto Mutt: "Well no one is asking you hair ball."

Cross-Up Cat: "And no one cares what you think either so, be quiet moto mouth!"

Mx-MoM: "Hey, don't you animules have anything better to do other than argue!" "Dishes need cleaning, trash needs ripping up, cats need chasing, tails need catching." "You know important doggie and kitty stuff!"

Moto Mutt: "Yeah we did promise Mx-Mom that we would be good while Incredi-bill is in Florida." "It really reeks that we couldn't go too."

Cross Up CAt: "Yeah instead we get to freeze our butts off in the great frozen northern Michigan and Man it is cold this week!" "I feel sorry for Mx-Mom and Stacey having to clean windows in below zero weather."

Mx-MoM: "Oh it is not so bad...at least I have the freedom to come and go as I please." "Kind of nice having control over when I work, when I work out and when I play!" "Of course, It all has to work out with Cassie's ski race schedule." "Which is about every week day night!" "Oh, that reminds me I have to go pick up her skis as they are getting waxed for tomorrow nights race!" "I will get back with you as soon as I can!" "Bye for now."

From Last issue:

Moto Mutt: "I could just hock up a hairball when I see the schedule the women pro's have this year!" "Gee whiz, they don't have one race during the televised men pro's races!" "The AMA didn't even rate them high enough to run them during the pro qualifiers!"

Moto Mutt: "I have to agree with you there. "It stinks that the women aren't scheduled to race with the men pros." "They deserve have a national audience just like the guys." "What happened to equal rights, it sounds like sexual discrimination to me."

Cross-Up Cat: "It is kind of weird, a few years ago the women had 8 races scheduled and quite a few of them were scheduled during the pro races on sundays. This gave the women some television coverage which helped make the public aware that there were women pro races." "The magazines also jumped in on the band wagon doing more articles on the girls." "Then the gear manufacturers started making more gear to fit women riders."

Moto Mutt: "Last year they were at 6 races during the pro men's qualifiers on saturday afternoon." "However this year they don't get to race during the qualifiers or during the main race." "They have to race at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday before the qualifiers and then again whenever they can fit another moto in."

Cross-Up Cat: "Unfortunately, they don't let the semi's in until 9:00 a.m. on Saturday which means that the pro women who are sponsored by let's say Motoworld for example have to find another way to get their bikes to the track." "Nothing like adding a lot of stress to your race day."

Moto Mutt: "Wow, that is so hard on the girls." "They work so hard to prove themselves, secure sponsors and then don't even get the same audience as the men pros."

Cross-Up Cat: "I am very disapointed and I feel bad for all the little girls who have watched the pro women race and have dreams of becoming pro only to see the women being squeezed in where it is convenient."

Moto Mutt: "So come on all you fans out there that support the women racers." "Let the AMA know you want to see the women have their spot right next to the men on pro race day."

Cross-Up Cat: "Lets hear it for the girls!"

Sponsorship Advice:

I will be updating and revising this as more information is available.

Where do you look for a sponsorship?
First of all there are already great tools out there:
http://www.sponsorhouse.com $0 for entry level, $59.95 basic and $119.95 for premium to post your resume.

http://www.mxsponsor.com
How MXSponsor.com Works:
www.MXSponsor.com works for all racers of all age levels that are looking to get sponsored. Forget paying up-front fees to submit a resume. Riders build their online profile, upload action photos, race results and write a cover letter and then submit to as many companies as they wish all for free. Riders then receive responses, deals, and offers, and can choose to pay a one time $50 for the year to sign unlimited contracts with no obligation. MXSponsor.com is the free choice for riders to see if they got what it takes.
MXSponsor.com's platform is free to companies looking to process resumes online or to find thousands of new potential riders. MXSponsor.com works for any company of any size and accounts can be setup within one business day. No fees, no contracts, no drama.

You post your resume on the site and they hook you up with sponsors.

Go to http://www.mxgirls.com for sponsorship information and tips. Michelle creater of mxgirls.com has great advice on how to get sponsors. Some of the current sponsors, (2006-2007), she has mentioned on her site are listed below

Go to local races to get local sponsors and big races to get major sponsors.

Always send your results with your sponsors to the local newspapers. Sponsors are looking for exposure for their name.

Do some research on the internet looking for the companies you would like to sponsor you. Let's say you need a new pipe…there is FMF, Pro Circuit.
Or you need your suspension set up: Renegade Suspension…New tires: Michelin…you get the picture.
Some companies want you to send your information right from their website, others want you to send them in by mail. Some have a deadline…it is usually December before the season starts.
After they receive your sponsorship request, they will either send you a contract stating what they expect of you or a letter saying they cannot sponsor you and the reason.
Read the contract carefully. You will be expected to follow through with it and not violate the terms. Once you sign and return the contract, congratulations you are now a sponsored rider! If you get a letter of rejection, that's o.k. try again next year.

Sponsors usually give you a full ride or a discount on parts, gear, motorcycles or whatever.

Don't forget to look beyond the motocross industry for sponsors…hey why not your local gas station, your beautician, and let's not forget your chiropractor?!!!

I would also check local organizations like the Professional Business Women's Association in your area. They are always looking for ways to help promote women in business and if your racing for a career, you are in business…right?
You can reciprocate these local organizations by giving a presentation at their group meetings giving them something to add spice to their meetings and giving you more exposure.

Below is some condensed information on sponsors from Mx-girls.com Bluestarmx.com, racerx.com, transworldmx.com. Be sure to check out Michelle's site for current information on sponosors

cerpt from last article:
Sponsorships

Cross-Up Cat continues: "Mx-Mom has had a couple of emails asking how to get sponsors, she wants to take over the pulpit to answer some of these questions, so that means...

Moto Mutt interupts: "You want me to...

Cross-Up Cat interupts again: "Shut your furry, flappin' mouth!"

Moto Mutt blurts: "Hey, you said you were going to change you lyin' sack of liverwurst leftovers!"

Cross-Up Cat says increduosly: "Hey, don't you have to follow the rules too?"

Grandma Cozi: "Your absolutely right, Cross-Up!" "However I think you two enjoy teasing each other entirely too much to ever give up that part of your relationship." "Teasing is o.k. if it is done in love, understood by each other and not in contempt." "Families tend to draw closer together when they can tease each other occasionally about something that they shared together." "Christians are supposed to do what is right, but are still allowed to have a sense of humor." "Why I think God had a wonderful sense of humor when he created dogs, don't you think?"

Moto Mutt says trying to sound offended: "Hey, I resemble the remark!" "I mean I resent that remark!"

Grandma Cozi smiles knowlingly with a twinkle in her eye: "That is exactly the kind of teasing I am talking about." "I got a rise out of you, but you could see that I said it with a wink of my eye and a tone in my voice, so you knew I was teasing and didn't mean any harm."

Cross-Up Cat laughs heartily: "Ohhh, I get it!"

Grandma Cozi continues more solemly: "There is a big problem with comunication these days." "Since we do so much of it by emails and through chat rooms it is really easy to type something and have it taken the wrong way by the reader." "The use of smiley faces and other icons help to put across our feelings as people can't see your facial expressions, see your body language or hear the tone of your voice." "It is important to read what you write a couple of times to make sure that it comes across how you are feeling." "Take the time to read it outloud to yourself first." "Sometimes it will sound completely different than what you mean." "There has been a lot of talk about cyber bullying on TV lately and we even had a note sent home from school about it from the principal to contact them if this happens." "Chat rooms and places that let you post pictures on line have provided a forum for people to bully other people in the privacy of their own homes, yet share it publicly to a wide range of people on the world wide web." "This has lead to a few teenage suicides." "There is no escape even in the safe harbor of our own homes." "Mx-Mom has seen this personally in her own home and this is what happens: the victim comes home from school or work, decides to get on the chatline to converse with a few friends, someone decides to pick on this particular person for whatever reason that sets them off, replies are shot back and forth...they don't have to worry about their physical well being as they are online, nor are they able to see the hurt expression or possible tears streaming down their victim's faces, a coward's way of bullying." "So, the victim blocks them." "It would be nice if that was that, but it is not." "The bully then posts in place of the name something mean about the person for all of the friends to see and the victim is humiliated." "Some cyber bullies even go to the extreme of posting humiliating pictures on personal websites and then posting the link for all to see." "You can imagine how the victim is feeling." "They don't want to go to school or work or even step outside the now unsafe harbor of their own home." "Friends turn away from them out of fear that they too will become this cyber bullies unwilling victim and the person is further alienated." "Mx-Mom has also seen extremely bad language used on the internet, with young people showing no repect for their elders." "Parents really need to monitor computer usage and also talk to their children about cyber bullies and proper computer etiquette." "Don't be afraid to ask if your children are aware of this tactic being used or if they have seen it being used." "This will empower them as they will then be aware of what is happening if it is going on and know that it is o.k. to report it to you or school authorities." "Thank God school authorities are now aware of these tactics and are putting a stop to it by blocking certain sites to be used by students to post cyber bullying." "Computers are a wonderful thing if used wisely, and does not consume your time." "So kids, get off your computer and go RIDE!"

Mx-Mom says...ahem: "Thanks Grandma Cozi for the relavant information about cyber bullying." "May I take the floor for some information about sponsorship for up and coming racers?"

Grandma Cozi: "Oh, sorry I forgot and took over the webpage for a moment, I get so fired up when it comes to this stuff I see from heaven and I just have to share it."

Mx-Mom says matter of factly: "Of course it is extremely important to be aware of the things that are happening in our society and to protect our kids." "Now let us help the young riders who would like to have help with their racing endevours."

"Sponsorship, easily said, not so easily obtained." The first thing you should think about is "why would anyone want to sponsor me?" "As President Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"; a sponsor says, "Ask not what I will give you, but what you will do for my company." "Get my drift?" "You need to think if you are really ready to make a commitment to the people you are going to ask to sponsor you." "A commitment being, how many races are you going to go to, what are your goals, how are you going to obtain them." "How are you going to represent the companies who are sponsoring you?" "What happens if you are unable to make these commitments?" "Are the funds in place to realistically obtain these race goals?" "You also need to think about what level and what location you are going to race at.." "Are you racing locally, in a district, nationally, internationally?" "That will effect who you are going to ask to be your sponsor." "For instance a local dealer may or may not want to sponsor you if you are going out of the area, or state, or nation." "They usually want their products to be seen locally, so they can sell more of them and get local advertising in the newspapers by reporting your race successes."

"So, now that you decided which races you are going to hit, what your goals are and where your possible sponsors will be located at, it is time to get the basics down on paper."

"Numero Uno RESUME."
Ok, here is a suggested list of what should be on your resume: ( I am removing the quotes to make it easier to read."

1.Your name

2.Your sport and whether you are an Amateur or pro and in it. ie: Pro Motocross Racer, Amateur competitor in
Supercross and Arenacross events.

3..Your web page URL if you have one

4.Contact information

5.What you ride

6.Your number

7, 8, 9 Your height, weight and age

10.Your mechanic if you have one

11.Favorite places to ride

12.Current sponsors

13.CAREER OBJECTIVES you objectives and goals for the year.

14. CAREER HIGHLIGTS starting with the most current. List the most important, not too many individual races, unless you don't have any championships or major events that you have competed in yet.

15.Awards you have recieved, for example in 1997 I received Rider of the Year, so I listed that. I also listed that I was a black belt in Tae Kwon do to show that I have the commitment to finish what I start. These could include awards you have received outside of your sport to show that you are a good citizen, etc.

16.Publicity you have received such as newpaper articles or magazines you have been in.

17.Short biography

18.Pictures: I like to include a couple of pictures such as one head shot and then one riding.

19. Last, but not least a COVER LETTER should be in addition to the resume briefly stating your request for sponsorship, why they should sponsor you and if what they would sponsor you with if it is not obvious what you would like them to help you with. For example your local gas station might sponsor you with gas for your rig. Don't forget to begin and end the letter with a thank you for reading the resume. The cover letter should have a date be in business form with your name and address on the top, the sponsors name and address and an re: (regarding sponsorship request.)

"You can take a look at Sarah's webpage to get an idea of what to include in a resume. Although, in a webpage you can include lots of extra stuff and it can be an extension of your personality, but a resume should be easy to read and to the point."

Next issue: Where do you look for sponsorship? Not on a gazelle!

Cassie Price doing a Pastrana like backflip move on the gazelle!
